In 2020, gun violence became the top cause of death for children and adolescents in the U.S., exceeding motor vehicle crashes, as reported in TheNew England Journal of Medicine.
The shooter was shot dead after the deadly incident on Tuesday at an elementary school in Uvalde.
Nineteen students, one teacher, and one other adult are sadly dead — after a shooting on Tuesday at an elementary school in Uvalde.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that 14 students and their teacher were shot while their classroom; however, later that same day, The Texas Department of Public Safety, Sgt. As reported on CNN, Erick Estrada confirmed that 19 students and two adults were killed.
As the tragic event took place, officers made their way around the school and evacuated children, and staff broke windows. The officers involved later were able to gain access to the classroom where the shooter stood.
All the victims were removed and identified before their families were contacted.
Lt. Chris Olivarez told the press details of the crime scene.
“It’s a small classroom, you can have anywhere from 25 to 30 students in there, plus there were two teachers in there. … So don’t have exact number of how many students were in that classroom, but it could vary … It was a classroom setting, a typical classroom setting where you have mass groups of children inside that classroom altogether, with nowhere to go, “Olivarez communicated that the attacker did not need to be chase since the shooter crashed a car near the school.
The shooter also decides to shoot his grandmother, but she survived the attack, thankfully. According to Abbott, the shooter is recognized as a Uvalde resident Salvador Ramos. The shooter rained bullets upon Robb Elementary School around 1:30 a.m.
The small city of Uvalde has about 16,000 residents and is roughly 85 miles west of San Antonio.
“I am heartbroken for our South Texas community. It is devastating when our innocent children become the victims of senseless violence. We are devastated.”Tony Gonzales, a Congressman who represents the area, stated.
“The Newtown Action Alliance”, is a gun violence prevention alliance. It was established after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown that involved 26 innocent people killed, issued a statement on Twitter expressing his thoughts.
“We are devastated. Our hearts are breaking for Robb Elementary & Uvalde families & community. We are angry. These shootings are preventable but those whose stood with the NRA after Sandy Hook nearly 10 years ago did absolutely nothing to prevent these tragedies. We need change.”
