DAMN was the first non-jazz or classical record of winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2017. The project covered many topics, including racism, gun violence, and more. In addition, in his recent solo album, Kendrick Lamar covers topics of recurring pain and the lives of ethnic and social patterns.

On the late project Mr. Morale & the Big Stepper, the opening track states a 1,855-day wait before releasing an album. This project would be his fifth studio album. The May 13 album was released through PGLang, Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records.

The double album serves as his last project with Top Dawg Entertainment.

Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) is an independent record label launched in 2004. Eleven artists are signed to the brand, including Schoolboy Q, SZA, SiR, and Kendrick. 

Last August, the California artist revealed he was in the process of creating his final album for the label. The rapper shared to Instagram with a post of a desktop folder labeled “nu thoughts” and a link to a his website. The album mixes boom-bap, jazz, and keys elements as Kendrick reunites with producers Sounwave, DJ Dahi, J.LBS, and Bekon. In addition, the album features numerous contributions from songwriter Sam Dew. The album had the perfect production team, including Beach Noise, bassist Thundercat, pianist Duval Timothy, and many more. On the body of work, you can find the voices of Sampha, Kodak Black, Ghostface Killah, Florence Welch, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Baby Keem, and author and spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle on some of the tracks.

Mr. Morale & the Big Stepper is received as a deep look at self as it relates to the public in many ways. Kendricks’s latest body of work deems a reach for positivity and Perspectives.

The repeated use of “take off” in his song encourages people to live their real life and not what social media is selling to them.

Worldwide Steppers: The Awakening Of Kendrick 

Worldwide Steppers is the third song on Lamar’s fifth studio album, with a brief appearance by Kodak Black. The record begins with Kodak’s voice as he says,

“Kodak Black, Oklama

Eckhart Tolle

And this here is the big stepper.”

Oklama is the name of Kendrick’s website; the word’s meaning would later be discovered as another word for “my people.”

Eckhart Tolle is a German author known for his book The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. One of my favorite books covers the philosophy of being. It’s crazy because I deem this song, in particular, “the awakening of kendrick.”

The chorus reads:

“I’m a killer, he’s a killer, she’s a killer, bitch

We some killers, walkin’ zombies, tryna scratch that itch

Germophobic, hetero and—” 

I would like to share what I read on Genius.com to explain the chorus better. “Kendrick comments on the nature of cancel culture, implying everyone, including himself, is conditioned to denounce others to scratch the itch of feeling superior. In the process, this disables the existence of those deemed ‘unclean’ in some sense. But, of course, there will always be someone who is able to point out some flaw in your being.”

I didn’t comprehend the chorus but reading this made me understand where K.dot was coming from after researching.

Kendrick also explains why he has been missing in action as he raps.

“Writer’s block for two years, nothin’ moved me.

Asked God to speak through me; that’s what you hear now

The voice of yours truly.”

During his time away, he has raised two kids and struggled with “writer’s block.” 

The most jaw-dropping comment was him recalling sexual encounters with white women, believing his ancestors would shame him for these relationships, and revealing that his companion, Whitney Alford, questioned his preferences.

Kendrick takes us through a journey through his mind and self-realization in this song.

Father Time: Daddy Issues

Kendrick speaks on how his daddy issues made him who he is in this song. The song covers toxic masculinity and characteristics learned from one’s environment.

In particular, Kodak refers to a chain gang as a prison club in these verses. He expresses the discomfort in prison through spoken word.

We Cry Together: Art 

On the track “We Cry Together,” Kendrick and Taylour Paige are reenacting an unattractive couple’s quarrel as they yell insults back and forth. I call it art just because the way the song was pure emotions.

Auntie Diaries: Understanding The Trans Community 

“Auntie Diaries” is the sixth track on the album. Kendrick raps about two transgender people in his life. He critiqued himself and society on the views on the trans community.

A week before Kendrick Lamar’sLamar’s latest project dropped, he released his latest single and music video for “The Heart Part 5,” leading the internet to buzz with enthusiastic remarks.

The rapper pays homage to Nipsey Hussle while also rapping from different points of view as he morphs into stars like Kanye West, OJ Simpson, Jussie Smollett, and Kobe Bryan while rapping in the first person.

“Part 5” includes contributions from Kyle Miller and Bekon and is produced by production and songwriting trio Beach Noise. The trio consists of Matt Schaeffer, Johnny Kosich, and Jake Kosich, whose other production credits include multiple iconic tracks. It also appears to sample “I Want You” by Marvin Gaye. 

The deepfake work that fans are raving about was done in the studio operated by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The document on the website stated :

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers- Release date: 5/13/2022, All factual information for this release will come directly from this source only.”

In August of 2021, Lamar Launched his official website “Oklahoma”.

Fans are convinced that Kendrick Lamar is releasing his latest album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, as a double album. A double album is an audio project that contains two bodies of work. Artists often think of double albums as one artistic piece. However, there have been different types of double records. For example, some artist has done their double album with one studio album and one live performance delivered. A famous example of how artists conduct double albums is the project Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast, which includes two solo albums done by each duo member.

On Tuesday, May 3, the California native gave his fans a clue about his next moves. The rapper uploaded a photo holding a couple of CDs and a book in one hand as he posed with his legs crossed on a Persian rug. The burgundy book is noticed with a branded label consisting of the project’s title, with Lamar’s full name. One had the word “Steppers,” which is referencing the Big Steppers and “master copy” on it, while the second read “Morale,” which refers to Mr. Morale which was seen on the rapper’s official website, oklama.com. K-dot has been utilizing his official website to provide fans with periodical details since 2017, when  Damn was released. 

“I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood,” he documented. “May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life’s calling.”

The Compton rapper also communicated how his ventures and past experiences influenced the following project. 

“Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family,” he noted. 

“While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next.”

Fans and blogs are deciphering what all this means. Fans assume that Since “master copy” is written on the two discs, Lamar is informing his fans the album is complete. The fact that the rapper is holding two CDs, which could suggest that Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers might be a double album. Of course, nothing has been confirmed with sources, but fans’ eagerness made the theory a 90 percent possibility. the post also included a note at the bottom of the letter: “Appreciate Your Patience.”

Last month, a press release was dropped through Kendrick’s website, revealing the release of his fifth project in May.

It has been five years since Kendrick released his project Damn, which won a Grammy in 2017. In 2018 he also worked on the Black Panther album. Since then, he has featured on songs by Beyoncé, Busta Rhymes, and others. He also won a Grammy for his work with Keem on “Family Ties.” Lamar fueled the hype even more after joining his cousin Baby Keem on stage during Keem’s debut Coachella performance last week.

And his fans know this upcoming album won’t fall far behind. 

Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers will reach digital platforms on May 13. However, there’s no word he will release a single before he drops his new project next week.
