WASHINGTON (AP) — A new release of Justice Department records tied to Jeffrey Epstein is reigniting questions about who knew what, when, and why so much remains hidden years after the financier’s death in federal custody. The files, made public under a recently enacted transparency law, include flight records showing former President Donald Trump traveled aboard Epstein’s private jet in the 1990s, references to “10” possible co-conspirators investigators attempted to contact after Epstein’s 2019 arrest, and confirmation that a document widely circulated online is fake.

The Department of Justice has officially released nearly 30,000 more pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Some of these documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims made against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election. To be…
— U.S. Department of Justice (@TheJusticeDept) December 23, 2025

The disclosures arrive amid renewed public pressure for accountability in one of the most infamous sex-trafficking cases in modern U.S. history. While officials say the records offer a clearer picture of the investigation, critics argue the heavy redactions leave critical questions unanswered and risk undermining trust in the justice system.

Creator: U.S. Justice Department | Credit: via REUTERS

1990s: Social ties and flight records

Among the newly released materials are flight logs indicating Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet multiple times between 1993 and 1996. Some flights also list Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who was later convicted of helping him sexually abuse underage girls.

The documents do not accuse Trump of wrongdoing, and the Justice Department said it found no evidence in the files linking him to criminal conduct. Trump has previously acknowledged knowing Epstein socially but has said their relationship ended years before Epstein’s legal troubles became public.

Donald Trump’s name was listed in Jeffrey Epstein’s “contact book

2005–2008: Earlier investigations resurface

Epstein’s legal issues began long before his New York federal case. Investigations in Florida in the mid-2000s later became central to criticism of how prosecutors handled the case. Under the new law, judges have authorized the release of additional grand jury materials tied to those earlier proceedings, citing Congress’ directive to increase transparency.

Those records have renewed debate over whether opportunities were missed to hold more people accountable during Epstein’s lifetime.

July 2019: Arrest and talk of co-conspirators

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges. One of the most closely scrutinized documents in the latest release is an internal email from around that time referencing agents attempting to contact “10” possible co-conspirators.

Only a small number of names are visible in connection with the message; most remain redacted. The reference has intensified speculation about who else investigators believed may have been involved and whether those leads were fully pursued.

Maxwell, the most prominent associate publicly identified, was later convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The status of any others referenced in the message remains unclear.

Maxwell and Epstein on his privet jet

August 2019: Epstein’s death

Epstein died in a federal jail in New York in August 2019 while awaiting trial, a death ruled a suicide but one that sparked global skepticism and conspiracy theories. His death effectively ended the criminal case against him, leaving victims without a trial and fueling demands for greater disclosure about his network.

A disputed document labeled fake

The new release also addresses a document that circulated widely online and was cited in some media reports: a purported letter from Epstein to former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar containing inflammatory references to Trump.

envelope addressed to Larry Nassar from a “J. Epstein,” released by the US Justice Department

The Justice Department now says the document is fake, noting inconsistencies including a postmark dated after Epstein’s death and features that did not match authenticated Epstein correspondence. Officials warned that investigative files can contain unverified submissions and that inclusion in government records does not mean a document is authentic.

A letter written by a “J. Epstein” and released by the US Justice Department.

Political sensitivity inside the investigation

Internal communications included in the release show prosecutors were aware that certain information — particularly Trump’s presence in flight records — could carry political consequences. Emails indicate concern about avoiding “surprises” later, reflecting an awareness that disclosures could collide with election-year politics and public trust.

Email sent from a prosecutor in New York saying that flight logs revealed that Mr. Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet “many more times” than publicly known.

2025: Transparency law forces disclosure

The records were released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by Congress and signed into law last year. The statute created a narrow exception to longstanding secrecy rules, allowing judges to order the release of grand jury and investigative materials while still requiring protections for victims.

The Justice Department says redactions are necessary to comply with privacy laws and to protect survivors, many of whom were minors at the time of the alleged abuse. Lawmakers from both parties, however, have criticized the scope of the redactions, arguing they limit the law’s effectiveness.

Why it matters now

The renewed scrutiny comes as voters and lawmakers grapple with how much of Epstein’s world remains hidden and whether transparency can coexist with protecting victims. The case has become a test of public trust in the justice system, particularly in politically sensitive investigations involving powerful figures. Each new disclosure, redaction, and correction risks deepening skepticism — not only about Epstein’s network, but about how institutions handle accountability when the stakes are highest.

What remains unanswered

While the latest release confirms some long-reported details and debunks others, major gaps remain. The identities of most potential co-conspirators are still unknown, and the extent of investigative follow-up is unclear. Officials say additional records are still being reviewed and could be released later.

For now, the files offer fragments rather than closure — a reminder that even years after Epstein’s death, the full scope of his influence, and who may have enabled it, remains unresolved.

America felt the frustration that Chris Wallace, the moderator for the recent Presidential Debate, was beginning to feel as he tried repeatedly to get Donald Trump to stop interrupting everything Joe Biden was trying to say during his turns to speak.

“It’s hard to get any word in with this clown…I’m sorry, person,” Biden responded when Wallace was trying to tell the former Vice-President that it was one of his moments to get the last word in one of the questions.

“Here’s the deal,” the normally calm and collected moderator tried to explain after having to raise his voice to stop Trump from interrupting. “We have six segments. We have ended that (last) segment, we are going to go to the next segment. In that segment, you each are going to have two uninterrupted moments. In those two uninterrupted segments, Mr. President, you can say anything you want…”

Many networks and publications, one being The Washington Post, further explained how Wallace’s experience during the two-hour debate was like a “runaway train”. Directly following the debate, reports indicated how so many Americans were likely frustrated with trying to hear what the two presidential candidate’s solutions to the real issues of race inequality, COVID-19, and the current state of the economy were.

Image from CNN.

Highlights from the 1st Presidential Debate Between Biden and Trump

Some of the best moments during the debate on Joe Biden’s part was when he maintained sticking to the facts as Trump relentlessly attempted to interrupt him. He pointed out exactly how many people were currently dying (and have died) from COVID-19 for example, and made viewers remember how Donald Trump told the public that the Coronavirus would go away on its own earlier in 2020.

Biden also resonated directly with the American people because, several of the times when Trump tried to interrupt Joe from speaking the facts, the former Vice-President would then look straight at the camera as if he was looking the millions of viewers at home in the eye, and talk to them straightforwardly about Coronavirus.

“You folks at home,” Joe began. “How many of you got up this morning, and had an empty chair at the kitchen table, because someone died of COVID? How many of you were in a situation where you lost your mom or dad, and you couldn’t even speak to them? You had a nurse holding a phone up so you could in fact say goodbye…this is the same man who told you that, by Easter, this would be gone by the warm weather, that it would be gone, miraculous, like a miracle…”

Image from ABC News.

Biden went on to reference how when Trump was presented with the number of deaths from the pandemic, he previously responded “It is what it is…” something former First Lady Michelle Obama also had pointed out in her speech at the Democratic National Convention several weeks before.

“Well, ‘it is what it is’,” Biden said, “because you are who you are…”

The debate moderator, Wallace, who is an Anchor for Fox News, then asked Trump would he be willing right then and there to condemn white supremacists and militia groups to stand down, and add to the already horrible violence going on in cities across the United States.

“I’d be willing to do that, but I would say that almost everything I see is from the left wing, not from the right wing. I’m willing to do anything…”

Wallace then gave him the go-ahead to denounce these violent racist groups. “Then do it, sir…”, said the moderator.

Trump asked him what group in particular was it that the moderator wanted him to instruct to stand down, and Wallace said The Proud Boys, who are, according to The New York Times, a violence-advocating, white supremist group who Trump has been denying to denounce since 2016 when he was first elected as President.

“Do it,” Biden also asked Trump to do. “Say it.”

“Proud Boys,” Trump said, “Stand back, and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s gotta do something about Antifa and the left, because this is not a right wing problem, this is a left wing problem…”

Image from The Real Deal.

Trump not only refused to denounce the white supremacy organization, but also said how he wouldn’t accept it if he thought the election ballots weren’t accurate. “I’m urging my supporters to go into the polls,” he said, “and watch very carefully, because that’s what has to happen, I am urging them to do it…I hope it’s gonna be a fair election. If it’s a fair election, I am 100% on board, but if I see tens of thousands of ballots being manipulated, I can’t go along with that…”

Trump had also recently (before the presidential debate with Biden) not fully committed to a peaceful transfer of power from president to president.

Reactions to the 1st 2020 Presidential Debate

People are now brainstorming how to make the head-to-head presidential debate better, and Joe Scarborough from MSNBC has one of the best suggestions…to turn off the microphone from a candidate if it’s not their turn to talk. According to The Hill, Scarborough actually parted with the Republican party not long after Donald Trump was elected as Commander-in-Chief, and the host of the popular program “The Morning Joe” tweeted that they should “cut his mic” so that ideas can be communicated more clearly.

This is a colossal waste of the American people’s time.
Vice-Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris, who was previously the 32nd Attorney General of the State of California and who Joe Biden chose as his running mate in early August 2020, was asked by CNN does she think that Joe should do another debate with the way Trump acted in this first one. “Joe Biden’s never gonna refuse to talk to the American people,”she said, “and have any opportunity that he can to speak directly to American families, speak about the issues, speak the truth, and address the facts of where we are now.”

Senator Bernie Sanders was another politician to respond to how the presidential debate went. He did so on Jimmy Kimmel’s post debate show. “I think Biden was able to make some very important points tonight,” he said, “while Trump continues to lie in an incredible way.”

Recently, Donald Trump was in the news again, this time in a head-turning report from the New York Times about his non-payment of federal income taxes over the past couple of decades. According to the September 27th report, (which was researched and written by Ross Buettner, Susanne Craig and Mike Mcintrye), Trump paid $750 in 2016 and the same amount again in his first year as President.

But, after The Times was able to retrieve information about his taxes that the public has been in search of for years, it was found that he had not “paid any taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years – largely because he reported losing much more money that he made.”

“We’ve been negotiating for a long time,” Trump said in a briefing shortly after the report was released. “Things get settled like in the IRS, but right now when you’re under audit, you don’t do that. So right now we’re under audit.”

Image from Fortune.

Trump denied giving any exact numbers about what he actually has paid in federal taxes, and feels that the report about his past financial history is only coming up now because of the upcoming election.

Details About Trump’s Income and Taxes

Generally, when the American public thinks of Donald Trump, they know him to be a very rich man. So, when these kinds of reports come about (the New York Times actually went back two decades into his financial history) it is shocking to think that with all the properties, golf courses and such, that him paying taxes would be a problem at all.

Still, as American citizens, we all have the right to know the Commander-in-Chief’s tax history, and it’s just mind blowing how much money Donald

Trump has made over the past couple of decades. According to one CNBC report, with the American reality series that Trump became very popular on called “The Apprentice” (which aired from 2004-2017), he made about $427 million.

Image from Washington Post.

He also made another $176 million with Vornado Buildings. According to their website, the company “owns and operates nearly 20 million feet of prime office properties.” These properties make up about 25% of Trump’s fortune, and The New York Real Estate News reported earlier in the summer of 2020 that they were looking to sell any towers that Trump co-owned. This came about as critics were still pointing out the fact that he may have had trouble “maintaining his business interests while in office.”

When it comes to office retail buildings overall, Trump has reportedly made about $336 million over the years.

Trump’s Business Failures

Much of the money that Trump made he actually put into buying hotels and golf courses, businesses that lost hundreds of millions of dollars over time, according to the recent New York Times report. The losses from those businesses are what he mostly reported to the IRS, and experts feel that was the reason why he was able to get away with not paying taxes for such a long time.

The current IRS audit is based on a refund that Trump received in 2010 of $73 million.

In the past, Donald Trump has shunned the idea of a traditional transfer of power, even way back to the 2016 campaign when he was seemingly joking about it. Now, with the election just over a month away, he was recently asked by a reporter at a news conference how he would respond if he was to lose the election in November.

The question was asked because of the fact that there are many American cities right now that are rioting because of racial killings by police, and most recently because of the decision to only indict one of the three officers involved in the murder of Breonna Taylor, an African-American ER Technician who was killed in her sleep by police bullets in March 2020.

Trump has referred to protesters as “terrorists” according to the New York Times, and supports the National Guard being sent to the cities that are holding large protests. And, he recently refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power after the election.

Trump’s Response to Having a Peaceful Transfer of Power After the Election

The question Trump was asked about having peaceful transfer of power after the election (whatever the results may be in November) was very important to ask with the dangerous rioting going on all over the United States. With him being the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, notably the National Guard, the American public wants to know how he’ll react if he loses in November.

Trump choosing reporters to talk to during the conference where he is refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. Image from NBC News.

The conversation between Trump and the reporter went like this:

REPORTER: Win, lose, or draw in this election, will you commit here today to a peaceful transfer of power? There’s been rioting in Louisville, there’s been rioting in many cities across this country, in both of the so-called red and blue states. Will you commit to making sure that there is a peaceful transferral of power after the election?

TRUMP: Well, we’re gonna have to see what happens. You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots. And the ballots are a disaster.

REPORTER: I understand that. But people are rioting. Do you commit to making sure that there is a peaceful transfer of power?

TRUMP: Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very peaceful transfer, there won’t be a transfer frankly, there will be a continuation. The ballots are out of control. You know it. And you know who knows it better than anybody else? The democrats know it better than anyone else.

Reactions to Trump Not Committing to a Peaceful Transition of Power

“Fundamental to democracy is the peaceful transition of power; without that, there is Belarus,” tweeted Mitt Romney, a republican who isn’t hesitant when it comes to criticizing Trump. “Any suggestion that a president might not respect this constitutional guarantee is both unthinkable and unacceptable.”

Joe Biden was asked how he felt about Trump’s response. “What country are we in?” he said according to The Hill, then removed his mask so that the reporters could hear him clearer. “I’m being facetious, I said what country are we in?
