On Monday Dr. Dre spoke to TMZ about the halftime Superbowl show including the performances by Mary J Blige, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and the surprising guest 50 cent.
What the interviewer was most interested in was what did Dr. Dre think about 1) Eminem taking the knee and 2} were the lines ‘and we hate popo” on his sing ‘alright’ by Kendrick intentionally omitted by the singer or were they censured?
First, Dr. Dre did agree that some minor changes were made to the lyrics but Eminem taking the knee was his own thing and no one had any issues with him or the posture.
A representative for the NFL did admit to Complex that the organization was fully aware that Eminem would be taking the knee- this was also seen on the rehearsal and no one had any complaints. The knee stance was accepted as part of the show.
As far the lyrics for his song ‘alright’ were concerned, Dr. Dre did state that during the rehearsal there was some discussion about Kendrick’s song, “m.A.A.d city,” where he says, “If Pirus and Crips all got along.” The organizers did have an issue with that lyrics and it had to be removed.
But Dr. Dre claims that there were no hard feelings and everyone accepted the changes without any malice. The key was to entertain the fans and millions of viewers on TV. Dre said. “Everybody felt the magnitude of what this thing was, and what we were going to be able to accomplish. It was a fantastic experience.”
Following the Superbowl, Dr. Dre said many of the entertainers came to his home and they had a great time- they also talked about working together on another project.
