This cycle can lead to cocaine use disorder, in which you have trouble controlling how much and how often you use the drug even when it has negative effects on your life. Another perpetuating factor of social media addiction is the fact that the reward centers of the brain are most active when people are talking about themselves. In the non-virtual world, it’s estimated that people talk about themselves around 30 to 40% of the time; however, social media is all about showing off one’s life and accomplishments — so people talk about themselves a staggering 80% of the time. When a person posts a picture they may receive positive social feedback, which stimulates the brain to release dopamine, rewarding that behavior and perpetuating the social media habit. Cocaethylene prolongs the euphoric effects of cocaine and makes them more intense. Scientists at the University of Cambridge in England identified abnormal brain structure in the frontal lobe of the brain of cocaine users. Some studies have shown that those who inject or smoke cocaine have a greater risk of complications than individuals who snort it.

This would suggest that some people might be more vulnerable to the addictive effects of cocaine. In occasional cocaine users, social or physical problems are rare, but scientists insist there is no safe amount of cocaine. In powder form, it usually consists of cocaine hydrochloride diluted with other substances, such as lidocaine, a local anesthetic, sugars (lactose), inositol, and mannitol. All the while, case reports detailing the harmful consequences of cocaine use abound [7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20]. This may lead to people injecting more often which increases the risk of harm.

No matter the form of the drug taken, tolerance soon develops, so that the user has to take more of the drug to experience the same high. Using it increases your risk of serious and sometimes life-threatening medical conditions like heart attack, stroke and drug overdose. Compared with the inhalation and intranasal routes, when cocaine is administered intravenously it takes twice as much time to reach the brain circulation and the peak plasma concentrations are higher and reached faster [53,54]. Histopathological changes such as focal tubular necrosis, hemorrhage and congestion, tubular epithelial vacuolization, and interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration and greater tubulointerstitial injury were observed [107]. Some of these withdrawal symptoms will subside after the first week or so that the individual goes without cocaine, but others tend to linger much longer than that, with depression and cravings that can potentially last for months. These issues make it very difficult for a person to stay away from the drug, as they may experience drug use triggers years after they’ve stopped using cocaine. This is why professional treatment followed by long term counseling and attendance at 12-step or peer support meetings is crucial for continued recovery from cocaine addiction.

EDEE was further suggested as a possible additional forensic marker for the particular situation of ‘crack’ and ethanol co-consumption [34].
