The pandemic had been really hard on you all, right? But it has been even harder on the young generation. Maybe this is because they are always looking for something they can dramatize. Recently, they hunted something new and started a campaign over it; Yeah, you guessed it!. We’re going to discuss the recent uproar between Eminem and Gen Z.
Internet is such a magical place, isn’t it? Amazing how a few kids can trigger such a serious reaction just by putting forward their otherwise casual opinion in a dramatic way. It seems like Gen Z has given Em a hard time,, but Eminem fans had been even better at returning the favor.
Eminem, the famous rapper, has been awarded several titles by his critics. Some of them view him as a misogynist, some say he is a homophobe, and some others believe him to be an abuse apologist. He was also found pleading guilty for the possession of a concealed weapon and assault in 2001. The last quarter-century, and the social changes there in, was never in favor of Marshall Mathers, and further salt was added to this recipe for drama when this “Cancel-Eminem” campaign started.
So, you might be wondering how it actually started? A random TikTok user came up with an issue, highlighting his lyrics from an old hit-song, which was his collaboration with Rihana; the masterpiece, released in 2012, “Love the way you lie”.The user earned millions of views on the video, though it was deleted after a relatively short span.
The lyrics highlighted in that video were,
“If she ever tries to f***ing leave again, I’ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire.”
The caption of the video stated,
“Yesssssss! Let’s cancel him”
Really bold of this user to state such a controversial opinion with such suggestions so easily! Well! The reaction of Eminem fans to this video was really supportive of the embattled musician.. Eminem is lucky to have such fans, the ones who know how to whip the haters. . Though in this case, the user took it a step too far..
The videos with the hashtag #canceleminem2021 earned more than 8.6 million views. But even after such a great campaign, Eminem fans successfully overcame it. Additionally, some of the fans began making their own rap songs criticizing this campaign. There are also also additional casual responses like,
He is too famous to be canceled! (True, Indeed)
His lyrics are too deep for you to understand. (Now, that’s a subjective approach)
To take a deeper look at the highlighted excerpt, the lines fit best to the situation. As in the respective song (Love the Way You Lie) Eminem was bound to portray a toxic relationship. And a strong argument against this “Cancel Eminem 2021” campaign is that Rihanna really liked the song. And both the artists had been in an abusive relationship; Rihanna with Chris Brown and Eminem with Kim Scott (his ex-wife).
After his fans, Eminem has also responded to Gen Z in his own unique fashion. . He recently released an animated lyrical video for the song “Tone Deaf” of his latest album. He seems to have a ciphered message for Gen Z. An excerpt from his latest song “Tone Deaf” goes like this,
“I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I am tone deaf)
Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me”
He also shared the link of his lyric video on his Twitter with these lines written in the caption of the tweet. Despite the backlash, Eminem seems quite calm. But to mention here, this campaign is going to be one of those few incidents in which Eminem actually showed a response.
Whatever the general feeling, Eminem fans have been really supportive of him too which you can see on twitter where the whole feud started.
