Six people were killed, and 12 others were injured in a mass shooting in downtown Sacramento earlier on Sunday. The impact and the number of injured individuals made the scene a bloodbath on 10th and K streets, the most sinister mass shooting in Sacramento’s history.
Police Chief Kathy Lester spoke about the shooting, followed by a fight. The fight left three men and women dead. She said that officers had retrieved a stolen firearm at the location.
“We have confirmed there were multiple shooters,” she announced, then stating no suspects were in custody yet due to the investigation’s earliest stage. However, the officer told the public that the police cameras in the area may have captured parts of the shootings.
The shootings occurred near the 1000 block of K Street, around a strip of nightclubs close to Sacramento landmarks such as Golden 1 Center.
“We know that a large fight took place just prior to the shootings,” said Lester. She was sworn in as chief two weeks ago. the Chief labeled the rank of violence as “unprecedented in my 27 years with the Sacramento Police Department.” The shooting happened a little after 2 a.m.
Family members gathered around the streets voiced that the shooting exploded as bars and clubs slowed down for the night. Relatives and social media indicated n pointed out videos that showed bodies on the sidewalk after the attack.
Sacramento police said they’re knowledgeable of the viral social media videos, especially the flick “that appears to show an altercation that preceded the shooting. We are currently working to determine what, if any, relation these events have to the shooting.” according to Lawe enforcement sources. In addition, authorities are currently analyzing whether automatic weapons were implicated. The investigation began by studying downtown cameras and license-plate readers for potential leads. According to Lester, she believes that the crime was “a really tragic, unfortunate situation.” She also called it a “complex and complicated” scene. The Officer pleaded to the public for assistance in identifying the suspects.
“If anyone saw anything, has video, or can provide any information to the police department, we ask for their assistance.
This event was Sacramento’s second mass shooting in weeks. In late February, a man shot his three daughters and a fourth person to death at a church in suburban Sacramento. After the crim has commented, the father then shot himself. During the incident, David Mora, who had a restraining order that restricted him from possessing a firearm, fired a AR 15-style rifle. According to a Washington, D.C., group called the Gun Violence Archive, “Sunday’s death toll matches the worst mass shootings in the United States this year.” According to the organization, six individuals were murdered in incidents in Milwaukee and Corsicana, Texas.
Authorities on Sunday are investigating a shooting at a concert in Dallas that left one person dead and 11 wounded. Officers responded to the incident near 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning at the outdoor trail ride and concert event in Dallas. Police identified victim Kealon Dejuane Gilmore, 26, as the man killed in the shooting. Gilmore was spotted near the stage at the event. According to authorities, he was killed by a gunshot wound to the head and murdered at the scene. The other individuals affected were taken to a nearby hospital, where some are in critical condition and others are stable enough.
“Everybody was running. It was so jam-packed right here, you couldn’t get in or out,” an event goer explained.
“I rolled down my window and I heard shots.”
Videos from the incident showed abandoned cars outside the event entryway that were behind by the concert attendees who fled the scene.
Sixteen people were wounded, including a boy as young as 13. Chief Eddie Garcia on Monday gave an updated tally on how many individuals checked into the hospital with gunshot wounds, an increase from the 11 victims to 16 reported on Sunday.
“The event should not have been allowed in the first place,” Garcia declared.
Garcia expressed that he’s expecting to work with city officials to create a regulation related to event promoters to prevent a situation, especially with the event being unpermitted.
“People coming to an event should be able to enjoy the event and not worry if they make it home,”
As the investigation comes together, the event was at capacity where. Witnesses said that with people running from the sound of gunshots, police and emergency vehicles could not enter the scene right away upon arrival.
Police are still unclear on the motive, and Gilmore’s death circumstances are still under examination.
