While people celebrated in good spirits on the day of America’s independence, some couldn’t shake the anger after seeing traumatizing footage of 25-year-old Jayland Walker being shot at least 60 times.
Jayland Walker was pierced with Bullets more than 60 times the night of his tragic death. At a press conference, triggering body camera footage from the night of June 27 was released.
“I won’t mince words; the video you are about to watch is heartbreaking,” Mayor Horrigan said before playing the footage.
It showed a pack of officers chasing and firing at Walker, resulting in him dying on the scene.
All of the eight officers involved in the act are now on administrational leave while the death of this young man is being investigated.
NBA superstar LeBron James, who was raised in Akron, shared his thoughts on the event on Twitter Sunday.
“I 🙏🏾 for my city today!”
Walker’s family lawyer, Bobby DiCello, told The New York Times that he’d “never seen anything remotely close” He also voiced his observation of the released video. He stated after watching the video; he found no evidence of the walker doing anything that would put the officers in fear. Even Though a gun was located in the car, Walker was not carrying it at the time of death.
